Trends in Craft Beer in SilverKris Magazine

SilverKrisDec2011CoverMy editor at SilverKris, the inflight magazine for Singapore Airlines, emailed me something like, "I hear craft beer is becoming popular. Can you do a story on that?"

"Sure," I said, knowing that boiling down everything going on with craft beer into even a feature-length story was going to be incredibly difficult.

The story kind of kicked my ass but taught me a lot about beer. I have a feeling for the trends but not a lot of knowledge of the technical details behind the beer styles so this involved a lot of research.

Anyway, I mushed things into categories like Belgian, barleywine, saison, session, flavored, high-alcohol, sparkling, canned, and casked.

The story is online in one of those online magazine reader formats at this link.

i hate nothing more than coming off as a know-it-all beergeek, but sierra nevada doesn’t make any beers spiced with cinnamon and clove. I am guessing you are referring to Celebration Ale?

I think you’re right, darn-it-all. So much for my fact-checking skills!

Nice article and well done for mentioning RedOak in Sydney. I was just there a couple of days ago for drinks & nibbles. Great place and some amazing beers even if I don’t like a lot of the tastes & such (berry beer??? EWWWW! 🙂
We tried the Sierra Nevada “Torpedo Extra IPA” and rated it “crap” due to the sharp, bitter, fruity/citrus taste. Even Kitt (who likes fruit/berry beers) thought it was pretty bad. Maybe it didn’t travel too well to downunder? 🙂

I’m not a huge fan of bitter IPAs at all. Regular Sierra Nevada IPA is about the most bitter I can take. But beer drinkers seem to flock toward the extremes…

Looks like I go for beers the same way I go for flying: Stick to the middle of the air ‘cos the edges have dangerous bits that can stop your flight all too quickly 🙂
