Run screaming to the newsstand to pick up the June issue of Wired magazine, because there is a story by me in it. Sure it's only 100 words long and it's about how to make clear ice, something you may have read about here, but you can consider it a collector's item.

I saw the piece about ice for the ice hotel, but nothing about making clear ice at home.
I struggled for three months trying to make clear ice. Never quite got there, but got FAR closer than I started with.

It’s on page 64. I read your post and you’re so close! Sounds like we did a lot of the same experiments.
The way I was able to do it is not by controlling the rate at which it freezes, but by controlling the direction. This is the post:

And usually the ice comes out much clearer than that. I do it every week now, removing the ice from the cooler before the bottom freezes with any cloudiness- perfectly clear ice every time.
